St Lawrence Country House
A number of rooms in this traditional country house felt dark, tired and unappealing, limiting their use. The owners wanted to reunify the house and to create more usable, welcoming spaces in which to host family and friends.
In the sitting room and conservatory, we worked to make a tangible connection with the outside. Vibrant greens, woad blues and pops of wattle yellow reference the palette of the country garden and re-energises the space.
The client’s heirloom furniture was reupholstered to give new life and real presence within the scheme. A sisal carpet was teamed with a special underlay which, together with a cobalt blue arrowroot wall treatment, significantly improved the acoustics. These elements, and the draping linens and assorted velvets, gave a true sense of being cossetted from the noise of the adjacent entrance hall as well as a cold winter’s night.
A narrow stairwell and somber landing thoroughfare was given a playful update. We used an arresting, classic Japanese design repeated throughout the space, and contrasted it with a bold squid-ink tone to the banisters and architraves.
